Computer safety, much like cell phone safety, is a big risk for victims of domestic violence. If you are in danger, use a safer computer that an abusive person cannot access directly or remotely. Safer options may include a public library, community technology center, a trusted friend’s home, or an internet café.
Abusers can monitor computer use in many ways. If you feel your safety is at risk and someone is tracking your activity: trust your instincts —they often are. You don’t need advanced technical skills to monitor someone’s usage, which makes it easier for an abuser to keep watch.
If you believe your home computer is compromised, avoid using it or limit your activity to safer browsing practices.
For example, if you plan to leave an abusive relationship, do not search for jobs or housing on a shared or monitored device. Instead, use a secure computer to research options and create a plan for a safe escape.
