Cell Phone Safety

Abusers may use mobile devices (cell phone, tablet, etc.) and communication tools to track a survivor’s location through service providers, apps, or location-sharing features. They may also check call logs to see incoming and outgoing numbers and may access text messages.

For safety, only make calls when it is safe to do so, and avoid contacting people if it could increase risk or lead to conflict. Even if you clear browsing history, your service provider may still show dialed numbers on call records.

Password protections and voicemail security can improve privacy, but in some situations they may increase risk if an abuser notices changes. Some people still use these features to prevent accidental use or limit access.

You may notice signs if someone is monitoring your device, such as unusual behavior, changed settings, or reactions from an abuser after you use your phone.
