About the Bridge House Program
The Bridge House program at SafeNet provides transitional housing for single women and women with children in Erie County who lack a permanent home due to domestic violence.
Eligible women are self-motivated and goal-oriented but they may still need additional support to secure permanent housing and build self-sufficiency.
While living in independent, furnished apartments, participants receive both individual and group counseling. In addition, they continue their domestic violence education and build skills for flexible, ongoing safety planning.
Moreover, the program connects women to mainstream resources through referrals and weekly case advocacy. As they move forward, participants set and work toward goals related to economic independence, continuing education or vocational training, positive parenting, and overall health and wellness.

Why Bridge House Matters to Erie
Bridge House stands out as the first transitional housing program for abused women in the United States, and it continues to meet a critical need in Erie County.
People often ask, “Why does she stay?” In many cases, the answer is simple: she has nowhere else to go. Although emergency shelters provide immediate safety, they typically offer housing for only up to 30 days. Consequently, many women who leave abusive situations face homelessness once that time ends.
At the same time, many survivors have experienced isolation, lack steady employment or income, and may not yet have the training or education needed to find work. Furthermore, they often navigate these challenges while caring for their children.
Because of these realities, Bridge House plays a vital role. The program offers not just housing, but also the time, structure, and support women need to rebuild their lives. Through counseling, education, and case advocacy, participants strengthen their independence and expand their access to community resources.
Ultimately, without Bridge House, more women and children in Erie County would face homelessness.
