Just one day in America over 20,000 victims of domestic violence and their children fled their homes because they fear for there lives. Hungry and afraid, they left most, if not all, of their possessions behind looking for a safe place to sleep and start a new life without violence as part of there daily lives.
The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) released last week some very disturbing figures. Nationwide domestic violence agencies have difficulty in raising funds for core services. Domestic violence programs nationwide provided services to 60,799 adults and children in just one day. Additionally-
- Over 20,300 adults and children sought refuse in emergency shelter
- More than 10,000 Adults and children were living in transitional housing
- Over 30,300 adults and children received non-residential services , such as counseling, legal advocacy and children support groups
- Over 21,500 domestic violence hotline calls
Safenet Figures for fiscal year 2007-2008
- Hotline Calls 982
- Emergency Shelter - 616-men, women and children
- Transitional Housing 79 -men, women and children
- Residential days 17,790
- Professional training provided by SafeNet – 2,203 men and women
- Community Education and In-school prevention programs – 4,429 adults and children
- Counseling Hours – 17,491 -men, women and children
- Hospital Counseling - 311 men, women and children
As in years past, this year’s numbers paints an appalling picture of the problem not only locally, but nationwide. However, even more disturbing is another picture: the
frightening reality of a bad economy that affects victims of domestic violence especially hard! SafeNet continues its Capital Campaign and you can help end the cycle of
domestic violence by donating today to: SafeNet, Inc., Attn: Capital Campaign, 1702 French Street, Erie, PA 16502, donate online at http://www.safeneterie.org or call 814-454-9277, extension 234.
SafeNet is not a homeless shelter, but a safe and confidential place specifically for men, women and children who are victims of domestic violence. From every city and
township in the area, victims come to SafeNet seeking support, safety and shelter from physical abuse and threats of violence occurring at home. After more that 30 years of
providing shelter and many other supportive services, SafeNet knows first-hand that there is hope and there is help. SafeNet is Pennsylvania’s oldest continuous running
