IPV (Intimate Partner Violence) Conference–The Silent Secret

SafeNet, Erie’s Domestic Violence Agency, will host an IPV conference on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at the Maennerchor Club Ballroom from 8:30am-3:30pm.

SafeNet has a long history of partnering with the medical community.  In 1994 SafeNet, with then Hamot Hospital and St. Vincent Health System, took part in a federal demonstration project to develop protocols for identification and intervention for victims. For over 20 years SafeNet has helped train health care staff in the importance of screening.  SafeNet staff also responds to victims in the health care setting, including 24-hour crisis response.

This year, on October 11th, Dr. Wanda Filer will be a plenary speaker at the conference on Intimate Partner Violence – “The Silent Secret.”

Dr. Filer is a family physician in York, PA, and is board chair of the American Academy of Family Physicians.   She is the founder and president of the Strategic Health Institute in York, a health care consulting firm dedicated to building awareness of today’s health issues and the  necessity and importance of IPV screening.  At the state level, Filer has the distinction of having served as the first Physician General of Pennsylvania, where she acted as public health advisor to then-Governor Tom Ridge.    Former First Lady Michele Ridge will introduce Dr. Filer at the conference.

Dr. Steve Krauza, a local Wellness Family Chiropractor, believes that wellness care is proactive care. Caregivers who connect to their patients through touch and communication will often be the first to discern the effects of abuse. Krauza will discuss vicarious (secondary) trauma, and how recovery from traumatic and abusive experiences is rooted in the neurology of the body.

Luncheon speaker, Reverend Darrell Armstrong, is the former Director of the Division of Prevention for the NJ Dept. of Children and Families where he oversaw the office of domestic violence.  His personal story is full of sad but ultimately hopeful stories of intimate partner and family violence, proving these experiences need not be destiny.

Members of the medical (IPV) committee include representatives from New Directions Health Care, Women’s Care Center, Safe Harbor, Community Health, UPMC, MCRC, USCRI, Highmark, St. Vincent-Allegheny, Gaudenzia, Gateway, Mercyhurst, Gannon, PSU-Behrend, Shriners, and VA Hospital.

The conference is open to all and is approved for continuing education credits.
